Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Which Works Best for What You Sell
By JCUpdated 6 min read
What is the difference between Google Ads and Meta Ads?
| Google Ads (Search) | Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) | |
|---|---|---|
| Moment | The person is looking for something | The person is scrolling their feed, stories, or reels |
| How you pick who sees it | Searches, location, and time | Audiences by location, age, interests, and look‑alike people |
| What matters most | That the search shows buying intent and that the landing page works | The creative: image or video, especially the first few seconds |
| Lead type | Lower volume, higher intent | Higher volume, intent varies |
| Campaign types or objectives | Maximize performance, Search, Display, Video, Apps, Shopping | Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion, Sales |
Which one works best for what you sell?
| What you sell | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Urgent services: locksmith, plumber, movers | Google Ads | People search at the moment they need help. “Locksmith” gets about 49,500 searches per month in Mexico |
| Professional services: accounting, legal, consulting | Google Ads | Someone searching “accounting firm” (14,800 per month) already has the problem |
| Business software | Google Ads | Few searches, but each click is valuable: a click on “payroll software” costs around 198 pesos because the client pays for a year |
| Real‑estate developments | Meta Ads, plus Google for people already looking for the area | Buyers don’t search your project by name; you have to show it. Searches like “apartments for sale CDMX” put you against big portals |
| Restaurants, experiences, events | Meta Ads | Decisions are made by looking at photos, video, atmosphere |
| Consumer products and online stores | Meta Ads, and Shopping when there are product searches | People discover items in the feed and also buy when they search |
| Something new nobody knows exists | Meta Ads | If nobody searches for it, Google has no audience to show the ad |
| Courses and education | Both | There are searches (“English course”: 22,200 per month) and decisions are also based on trust and content |
The search volumes and cost‑per‑click numbers are estimates from Ubersuggest for Mexico as of October 17 2026.
What about lead quality?
On Meta, lead‑generation ads use instant‑form pop‑ups that people fill out without leaving Facebook or Instagram. This brings more leads at a lower cost, but some people don’t remember giving you their info. On Google, a person who fills out your form has already searched, visited your site, and decided to contact you: fewer leads, but higher intent.
Because of this, comparing cost‑per‑lead between the platforms can be misleading. Compare cost‑per‑sale instead. Three things improve Meta leads a lot:
- Filtering questions in the form: location, budget, purchase date. You get fewer leads, but they are better.
- Immediate contact. A Meta lead cools down within hours. If you call the next day, they may have forgotten you.
- Connect the form to your CRM. Meta recommends this so all leads are in one place. It also lets you tell the platform which leads became sales, so it can find more similar people.
How much budget do I need for each?
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | No set minimum; you choose an average daily budget | There is a minimum that varies by country and objective; the ad manager warns you if you’re below it |
| Daily spend | Up to twice the average daily budget for most campaigns | Up to 75 % more than the daily budget |
| Monthly/weekly cap | 30.4 × the average daily budget in a month | 7 × the daily budget from Sunday to Saturday |
| Rule to watch | Get enough reach for clicks on purchase‑intent searches | If you use a cost‑per‑result goal, the daily budget should be at least 5 × that goal |
The reverse calculation—from desired sales to budget—is in cuánto cuesta anunciarse en Google Ads en México. Use the same idea for Meta by swapping cost‑per‑click for cost‑per‑lead.
Can I use both at the same time?
Yes, and they complement each other. A common pattern: someone sees your Instagram ad, does nothing, and a few days later searches your brand name on Google. If you don’t show up well in that search, another business could take the sale.
To see what each channel adds:
- Record the source of every lead in your CRM as it comes in.
- Ask the prospect how they heard about you on the first contact. It’s not perfect, but it shows things the reports miss.
- Review cost‑per‑sale for each channel once a month. If your sales cycle is weeks long, weekly numbers can be misleading.
If you’re not sure where leads drop off, check your embudo de ventas before moving money.
How to decide in an afternoon
Answer three questions:
- Do people search for what you sell? Use Google’s Keyword Planner to see search volume in your area. Very low volume means Google has few people to show your ad to.
- Can it be understood in a photo or 15‑second video? If yes, Meta has the creative space. If you need a lot of explanation, Google and a good landing page work better.
- How much is a customer worth? If a customer brings 50,000 pesos a year, a 200‑peso click may be cheap. If they bring 500 pesos, it’s expensive.
Common mistakes when choosing
- Choosing by trend. Start with the goal, the customer, and how you sell; pick the platform last.
- Promoting a post instead of building a campaign. The “Boost” button is easy, but gives less control over goal, audience, and measurement than the ad manager.
- Comparing cost‑per‑lead instead of cost‑per‑sale.
- Using the same creative on both. A search ad answers what the person typed; an Instagram ad must stop them while they scroll.
- Turning off a channel after two weeks. Both platforms need data to learn who to show ads to. Use at least a full month of leads before deciding.
What I would do
- Check if there are searches for what you sell in your area. If there are, start with a focused Search campaign.
- If there are none, or your product is decided by sight, start with Meta and use a form that includes filtering questions.
- Measure both channels all the way to sale in your CRM and shift budget toward the channel with the better cost‑per‑sale, not cost‑per‑lead.
