Local SEO: Appear on Google Maps in Mexico City

By JCUpdated 7 min read

To appear on Google Maps you need a verified Google Business Profile with your business’s real name, the correct category, and customer reviews. Google orders map listings using three factors: relevance, distance, and popularity, and you cannot pay to move up. In Mexico City distance matters a lot: someone searching from Polanco sees a different map than someone searching from Coyoacán.

The rest of local SEO is consistency: the same data everywhere, real photos, reviews that arrive each month, and a website that confirms what your profile says.

What is Local SEO?

It is the work that makes you show up when someone looks for a service near them or includes a neighborhood in the search: “dentist CDMX”, “accountant in Coyoacán”, “SEO agency CDMX”. In those searches Google usually shows a map with businesses before the regular results, and that map pulls data from the Business Profile, not from your website.

That’s why some businesses with mediocre sites get calls every day from Maps, while businesses with good sites do not appear on the map.

Searches that include the city name are few, but they are valuable. According to Ubersuggest, Mexico searches “seo cdmx” about 140 times a month and “agencia seo cdmx” about 70 times. When the city is written, the user already wants someone nearby.

How to Appear on Google Maps Step by Step

  1. Create or claim your profile with the company’s Google account, not an employee’s personal account.
  2. Verify it. Without verification you don’t control what appears.
  3. Write the real business name, exactly as it appears on your storefront, invoices, and paperwork.
  4. Choose the primary category that best describes what you sell, and only add necessary secondary categories.
  5. Define your service area: show the address if you serve customers there, or set a service area if you go to the client’s home or office.
  6. Complete hours, phone, website, services, and description. Use the same phone number that appears on your site.
  7. Upload real photos of the place, the team, and finished work.
  8. Ask for reviews from all your customers, on a regular basis.
  9. Link the profile to the correct page on your site: the page for the main service or the branch, not always the homepage.

What Factors Google Uses to Rank Map Listings

Google says it uses three:

Factor What it means, according to Google What you can do
Relevance How closely your profile matches what the person is looking for Choose the correct category, list all services, write a clear description, and have a site that talks about those services
Distance How far your business is from the person searching You can’t move your location, but you can define your service area well and have a separate profile for each real branch
Popularity How well known your business is Get reviews and ratings, earn mentions on other sites, and have links pointing to your site

Google also says that the more positive reviews and ratings you have, the better your local ranking can be, and that you cannot request or pay for a better spot. Google Ads are separate ads: paying for them does not improve your map ranking.

Which Google Rules Should You Avoid Breaking?

A suspended profile takes time to recover, and while it’s suspended you don’t appear. These are the most common violations in the city:

Rule What Google says Common mistake
Name Use the exact name of your business; adding unnecessary info can lead to suspension “Dentista Roma Norte Implantes Económicos” instead of the real name. Google gives “near La Roma” as an example of what is not allowed
Address If you don’t serve customers at the address, hide it Putting your home address or a coworking space where no one is served
Service area Up to 20 areas, generally no more than 2 hours travel from your business Marking the whole country to “appear in more searches”
Categories Use the fewest possible, representative of your main activity Adding ten categories “just in case”
Reviews Offering incentives (payments, discounts, free items or services) for reviews, or only asking happy customers for positive reviews, is prohibited Giving a 10 % discount for a 5‑star review, or sending the link only to satisfied clients

What If I Don’t Have a Physical Location?

If you work at the client’s home or office, or remotely, you are a service‑area business. This applies to plumbers, pest control, home trainers, and consultants like me. In the profile you remove the address and define the zones you serve: boroughs of Mexico City and municipalities of the State of Mexico, up to 20.

You will appear less often than a business with a physical location in “near me” searches, because Google has no exact point to measure distance. Compensate with relevance and popularity: precise category, well‑described services, and steady reviews.

What Changes When Doing Local SEO in Mexico City?

  • The city is huge. If you have a single location, focus on your neighborhood first before trying to appear city‑wide.
  • People search by neighborhood and borough. “Accountant in Coyoacán”, “dentist in Del Valle”. List the areas you serve in a real coverage section on your site, not in a footnote list of 80 neighborhoods.
  • “Ciudad de México” and “CDMX” both appear. Users type both forms. Use both naturally on your site.
  • Branches. If you have two or more locations with staff, each needs its own profile and its own page on the site.
  • The map and the site reinforce each other. The service page should have the same name, phone, and area as your profile. If they don’t match, Google sees two versions of your business.

30‑Minute Profile Review

What to review How It’s okay if…
Name Compare it with your storefront and invoices It is identical, without neighborhoods or slogans
Primary category Search your service on Maps and look at the category of the top three businesses Yours describes what you sell most
Phone and website Compare with your site and social profiles The same number appears everywhere
Reviews Count the ones from the last 3 months They arrive each month and all have a response
Photos Check the most recent uploads They are real and from this year
Results Open the profile’s performance stats You know how many calls, directions, and site clicks you got last month

If any row is off, start there. If everything looks good and you still don’t appear, the issue is usually site relevance: check the auditoría SEO: qué revisar antes de pagarle a alguien.

How to Ask for Reviews Without Breaking the Rules

  • Ask every client, not just the happy ones, right after the service is finished.
  • Send the direct link to your profile via WhatsApp or email with a line like: “Can you help us with a review of how it went?”
  • Do not offer anything in return, no discount or gift.
  • Respond to all reviews, even the bad ones. A calm reply to a negative review tells more to a prospect than ten five‑star reviews with no response.

Do I Need an SEO Agency in Mexico City for This?

You don’t need an agency to create and maintain the profile; someone on your team can do it with one or two hours a month. A consultant helps by connecting the profile to the site and to sales: which pages to create for each service or area, how to track calls that come from Maps, and how to log those contacts in your CRM. If you were looking for an SEO agency in CDMX: you can work with me directly, without intermediaries.

What I Would Do

  1. Keep the profile clean: real name, exact category, well‑defined area, and the same phone as the site.
  2. Ask every client for a review right after the service, using the direct link, with no incentives and no filtering.
  3. Create on the site a page for each main service that mentions the zones you serve, and link to it from the profile.
